Announcing Kids Delight~ Salads and Soups

This month I am hosting Srivalli’s Kid’s Delight. My theme is Salads & Soups.

Trying to get healthy eats in kids is a challenge. It should first look good, then smell great and taste good. With the rains healthy and light foods are what we love! Soups are welcome once we come home, all drenched….

Soups are welcome once we come home all drenched.  Salads are welcome anytime. The condition is they should look beautiful.

Make Salads and Soups this month from 16th June to 15th July and send your entry to me.

But with my love for checking the history of foods lets check out first

Salads

Try typing the word salad on Google and what is below is the synopsis of what Wikipedia says.

“Salad the word comes from the French salade, from the Latin salata (salty), from sal (salt). In English, the word first appears as “salad” or “sallet” in the 14th century.

A salad is a dish consisting of small pieces of food, which may be mixed with a sauce or salad dressing and are typically served cold. Salt is associated with a salad because vegetables were seasoned with brine or salty oil-and-vinegar dressings during Roman times. Salads including layered and dressed salads were popular in Europe since Greek imperial and particularly Roman imperial expansions.

Salads can incorporate a variety of foods including vegetables, fruits, cheese, cooked meat, eggs and grains, leafy greens when you use a leafy vegetable your salad is a garden salad. Other types include bean salad, tuna salad, fattoush, Greek salad.

There are a variety of ways in which you can serve a salad try

  • Appetizer salad this is a light salad to stimulate the appetite as the first course of the meal.
  • Side salads, to accompany the main course as a side dish or
  • Main course salads, usually contain chicken breast or slices of beef
  • Dessert salads, sweet versions often containing fruit, gelatine and/or whipped cream.

Generally, a sauce is used to flavour a salad and is called a salad dressing some of the dressings are ranch, Thousand Island, and vinaigrette.” to say that salad is an integral part of Indian cuisine. We have them as sides they are called as

There is no mention of the Indian Salads! A Salad is an integral part of Indian cuisine it also has a place in the traditional thali. The placement is with reference to salt which is served to the upper left of a plate, so you have salt and lime, chutney and kosambri . Salads are served as sides they are called as kosambri, koshimbir, raita etc. in Indian Cuisine!

I am not choosy link up any kind of vegetarian salad you kid likes.

Soup!

The word evokes a picture of a cold breezy day and you sitting in a warm corner and drinking hot soup!  With or without bread!

Soup is liquid food, generally served warm but then you can also have it cold!

A soup is made by combining ingredients such as meat and vegetables with stock, juice, water, or another liquid the soup is generally boiled in a pot  till the flavours are extracted, forming a broth.

Soups traditionally are classified into two main groups’ clear soups (my favourite ones) and thick soups.

Thick soups depending on what is used for thickening are called different names:

  • purées are vegetable soups thickened with starch,
  • while bisques are made from puréed shellfish or vegetables thickened with cream,
  •  Like creamy soups? They may be thickened with béchamel sauce white sauce,
  • while veloutés are thickened with eggs, butter, and cream.

You can also thicken soups and broths with egg, rice, lentils, flour, and grains carrots and potatoes.

There is not much of a difference between a stew and a soup. In fact, I am at a loss many a time whether to call the end product a soup of a stew.

But Wikipedia the place where I have gleaned this information says,” in some cases there may not be a clear distinction between the two; however, soups generally have more liquid than stews.”

Who am I to grumble a soup gets in all the unwanted veggies in especially puree, I spend lesser time in the kitchen and what I have made is generally not always, generally appreciated.
