"Kelyacho Halwo" is a Goan delicacy that is made for Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi. The bananas used in making this delicious delicacy are also called Nendra/Mandoli/ Kerala bananas/Moira bananas. Kelyacho Halwo is also a preserve made and enjoyed with chapatti, traditionally.

Kelyacho Halwo
Moira is a small village close to Mapusa, Goa. Moira has like the rest of Goa a unique history and their claim to fame is the long tusk-like banana planted by the Franciscan Fathers from Kerala and eaten boiled, baked or fried. Moira is also known for the crazy people who reside here.
“Moidekars “ or “moiddekar” as the resident of Moira is called very intelligent and hard working. But we mere mortals cannot understand them so it seems like crazy erratic behaviour and is beautifully described in Wikipedia as,” This is how the people of Bardez describe the indefinite trait. To moiddekar num re, he is a guy from Moira, sar-koch moiddekar, every inch like a guy from Moira; taka matxem moiddechem assa, he’s got a bit of it from Moira."
Jokes apart let's see how to make Halwa with the Mainoli Keli for this Diwali. If you are planning a Goan Diwali you can also make for Diwali Celebration the following items commonly made for Diwali in Goa, my BM theme is Diwali Savories and Sweets.
- Rasatle Fov or Pohe In Coconut Milk (Savoury)~ Indian State Goa
- Batat Fov ( make like Kande Pohe Recipe for Quick Breakfast or Snack only replace the onion with potato)
- C for Chana-Cho Ros Goan Style Peas Bhaji
- Ammade Che Karam a Goan Delicacy
- Churma, a Goan Delicacy
The other things that attract me to Diwali are
- Nariyali ki Barfi|Kobbari Vadi ~Diwali Special
- Chirotti ~Indian State Karnataka
- Besan Ladoo/Besan Unde/ बेसन के लड्डू
- Easy Rava/Sooji/Semolina Laddoo Alias Rava Unde
- Moong Daal And Black Pepper Sev
Before you start making the "halvo" a few pointers,
- Use the moira bananas are ripe only when the skin is black but the fruit is firm.
- In case you cut the banana after it is overripe, do not cook them for long 10-15 minutes maximum.
- If you lose patience and make the halvo before the fruit is ripe cook longer about 30 minutes.
- Store in an airtight container after it cools completely.

I was assuming that it would be a mushy preparation until I saw the pictures. Can't wait to try this. Seems like it would make a great topping for pancakes as well.
ArchanaPotdar says
Suma you will need the correct bananas else it gets mushy. Too ripe or too raw also gives incorrect result.

This halvo looks so yum Arch. Welcome back. We missed you. I guess we need to source this type of banana because normal one would go mushy.

Interesting story about Moira and its people. Am sure you can't tell them that they are crazy! As for the kelyacho halwa it so reminds me of the Gujarati style ghee kera. Only difference is that the bananas are not cooked. The rest is all the same, adding ghee, cardamom and sugar. Usually enjoyed with roti when kids don't a sabji that has been cooked for the family.

It was interesting to go through your post for a prelude of Kelyacho Halvo.. I have been intrigued to know about recipes from different cuisines. This recipe is so similar to the way we make mangoes preserve and enjoy with roti. The combination of cloves, cardamom, and banana must be a delightful fusion of flavors. Bookmarking this recipe to try it out.
