Make some Quick, delicious and simple fluffy cumin seed flavoured rice every time. This flavourful Cumin Rice makes dinner and packed lunches a breeze.
Simple Jeera rice can be made both in the pressure cooker. However, I prefer making my jeera rice on the stovetop in an open pot.
This hassle-free flavourful rice is something we love. Jeera Rice is easy to make and pairs well with spicy curries and bland dals as well. I like to make my life easier with this simple rice.
I love to pair my Jeera rice with Tomato Saar Recipe, A Delectable Vegetarian Dalcha Recipe. How about some South Indian Bhat Recipe? This makes a yummy rice recipe too.

This Jeera Rice recipe and me
One of the first rice I cooked was at about 8 years was Jeera rice! Cooked meaning I stirred the pot when Amma was not looking!
Over the period I have changed the way I cook it. I am also sharing the pressure cooker method of making this yum pilaf.
Why MSK Jeera rice recipe:
Make this recipe as it is
- Quick and Easy to make
- Flavourful
- Pairs well with both spicy curried and bland ones
- Pair Jeera rice with vegetarian and non-vegetarian curries
Let's get started:
These are the ingredients you will need. For quantities please check the recipe card.
Ingredients:
- Basmati Rice
- Onion
- Cumin seeds
- Clarified Butter
- Bay leaf
- Cinnamon
- Peppercorns (optional)
- Star Anise
- Cashew nuts
- Salt
- Water
Method:
For the Stovetop method:
- Wash and drain the rice. Set aside.
- Add the ghee to the thick bottomed vessel.
- Add the cashew nuts and fry till the cashew nuts are golden brown. Drain and set aside.
- Add the bay leaf and the cumin seed, star anise, cinnamon, peppercorns, cardamom and cloves.
- Once you get the wonderful aroma of the spices add onions and fry till translucent.
- Add the rice and fry for a few minutes.
- Add the 2 cups water, salt and stir. Check the seasoning and cook till the rice is done.
Pressure Cooker method:
- You can make the jeera rice directly in the cooker. Follow the steps exactly but add 1.5 cups of water.
- cook for 1 whistle and wait for the pressure to drop.
- The quantity of water here is approximate please adjust as per the rice. Generally, old rice needs more water and new rice lesser
Substitutes:
- In place of rice use quinoa, millets.
- Use oil in place of clarified butter for a vegan Jeera Rice.
Variations:
- Kid-friendly- This rice is bland and great for kids. But if you plan to serve your toddler this I will make it softer and a little sticky.
- For a party use a lot of nuts like almonds, pistachios, raisins that are fried in clarified butter.
- Vary the whole masala to alter the flavour.
Equipment:
For the Stovetop method:
- A deep pan
- Spoons and ladles
- Bowls
Pressure Cooker method:
- Pressure cooker
- Spoons and ladles
How to serve:
- Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with cashew nuts.
- Cool a bit then add coriander leaves.
- Serve with dal fry, or makhani gravy, sabzi and dal or Punjabi Pakoda Kadhi Yum!!
- This rice tastes good in packed lunches so do pack them up. With lentils curry and papad they make a filling meal
How to store:
- Since there are onions used the rice can be stored for a day in the fridge. I have never kept it longer. In case the rice is sticky or smells bad please discard it.
For Your Questions:
Protips:
- Use any rice but I ampartial to basamti rice while making Jeera Rice Recipe.
- I wash and drain the rice. But you can also soak them in water for 30 minutes before adding to the pan.
- I love using a combo of star anise, cinnamon, peppercorns, cardamom and cloves along with cumin. You can use or leave out any of them.
