Jhalmuri, or Jhaal Muri, is a popular street food with puffed rice as the star ingredient. It is a delicious dish from Bengal, specifically the Kalkota cuisine, where Muri is Puffed Rice. This simple snack is similar to sukhi bhel, which we get in Mumbai, but it is different.

I love street food, and chaat items are my favourites, so I make them often. The basics like sev batata puri, bhel puri, and pani poori are family favourites.
My daughter's favourite is ragda patties; the others are samosa chaat. I store the tamarind chutney, dates chutney, and green chutney in the fridge, but the recipes have not made it to the blog.
Since I like to explore flavours, I love to make Barley bhelpuri, Sprouts BhelPuri, which we love. The water from the cooked barley can be used to make this lemon barley water, which is cooling and Perfect for this hot, sweltering summer.
If you want an easy way to store the murmura or puffed rice, you can try my Masala Murmura gets done in 10 minutes.
Protips for Jhal Muri Recipe
- Use fresh, crisp Murmura for making Jhal Muri. If they are not crisp, I suggest dry-roasting the Puffed rice or Murmura. You can also microwave the Puffed rice for 60-90 seconds.
- Keep all the ingredients chopped and ready.
- You need to serve the immediately after it has been prepared.

Equipment
- 1 Bowls
- Knife and board
- 4 Bowls to serve
Ingredients
- 2 cups Puffed rice muri
- 1 onion chopped fine
- ¼ cup Cucumber diced
- 2 tablespoon Green Raw Mango finely chopped
- 2 tomato chopped fine
- ½ cup jhal chanachur i used spicy namkeen/ sev
- 1 tablespoon Coconut finely chopped( I did not add)
- 1 tablespoon pickle oil spicy
- 2 tablespoon Peanuts
- 2 tablespoon dalia roasted Chana dal
- 2-3 Green chilli diced
- 2 teaspoon Lemon juice
- ½ teaspoon red chilli powder
- 1 teaspoon chat masala
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- If you are using mustard oil, heat it in a pan to a smoking point, then switch off the burner. Let it cool. Skip this process if you plan to make it with pickle oil.
- Mix 2 cups Puffed rice, 1 onion, ¼ cup Cucumber, 2 tablespoon Green Raw Mango, 2 tomato, ½ cup jhal chanachur , 2 tablespoon Peanuts, 2 tablespoon dalia, 2-3 Green chilli1 tablespoon Coconut (if using) into a big bowl.
- Mix well, add 2 teaspoon Lemon juice, ½ teaspoon red chilli powder, 1 teaspoon chat masala and drizzle some 1 tablespoon pickle oil or mustard oil.
- Mix well with a wooden spatula and serve immediately in paper cones.
Notes
- Tastes best when the puffed rice is fresh and crisp. So it also means serve immediately.
- Do not substitute the Mustard oil /pickle oil.
- It can also be made with boiled potatoes, sprouted black chana, and diced tomatoes, so you can add or skip any of these, depending on your taste.

That is a lip-smacking snack tangy and spicy at the same time. It appears to be very similar to dry bhel.
