Summer is bad this time. My girls are complaining about the heat and Apeksha the elder one is getting ulcers in her mouth Thanks to the erratic schedule.
The one thing that she is willing to drink is “Majige” or “Tak”, "Chaach" also known as buttermilk anytime of the day. So I am making a jug full of this delicious drink.
Making buttermilk is no great rocket science!
Generally I just add hing/asafoetida, salt the curds and whip it up. Later just as I am serving it I add water to make it watery. You can add jeera powder too!
But there is one way we all love it ( except for the younger one as she finds it pungent) is add 1 chilli chopped fine or crushed, chopped coriander and grated ginger if you feel like it and whip it up.
In my hometown buttermilk made with chilli is eaten with rice at the end of your meal for any wedding or any function! There is a vagarni/phodni/ bhagar on top of oil, hing/asafoetida and mustard, curry leaves!!
The buttermilk I have here is a combo of both there is hing/asafoetida, coriander, jeera powder, and a dash of grated ginger.
You do not want it savoury make it sweet add sugar and whip it!
Buttermilk is considered a coolant for the body and is recommended by the doctors now as a better option as a drink to the fizzy drinks or the canned juices that we tend to drink.
Come home from the sweltering heat and drink just one glass of buttermilk and see the difference for yourself!
You will find that regular drinking of buttermilk helps... Your eyes do not burn due to heat, you do not get ulcers in the mouth and you do not gain weight which you do with the canned juices and fizzy drinks which I strongly believe are just empty calorie loaders!

My mother coarsly grinds a mix of curry leaves, chili, ginger and coriander leaves. She keeps this in the fridge and then goes on adding butter milk to it whenever needed. Buttermilk is cooling indeed and so perfect for the scorching summer heat!
